KOH KHO KHAO

Koh Kho Khao is a charming and idyllic island on the south-west coast of Thailand. It was discovered by backpackers about 20 years ago and has grown to become a popular tourist destination.

The island offers lush national parks, virgin beaches, fresh waterfalls, clear blue waters and stunning sunsets. If you want to swop a bustling and busy life with a peaceful Thai paradise, this is the place to go.

If you are more interested in the animal kingdom than the natural beauty, the island also offers an interesting bird life, and between November and February you can watch turtles lay their eggs on some of the island´s more secluded beaches. Along the west coast of the island you can stroll on a 18 km long virgin beach. There is also a mountain with a viewpoint, with several idyllic places to stop on your way up to grab something to eat.

If you want the feeling of freedom to explore the surroundings on your own, we recommend renting a moped. There is little traffic but take it slow, there are water buffaloes roaming around freely.

There are both police and a doctors on the island, and there is also a primary school where tourists can visit and take part in school life. Some of our guests have been involved in sharing their English skills, and also helping where and when needed.

Koh Kho Khao is a very family friendly place to be. With little traffic and only approx. 1.300 residents in five small villages, you and your kids are in a safe place.

LOCATION

Koh Kho Khao is located on the south-west coast of Thailand, approx. 90 km. north of Phuket in the Phang-Nga province. Khao Lak is the nearest tourist area, located about 25 km south of the island.

GETTING THERE

The best way to get to Pranee Beach Bungalows is to fly to Phuket. Krabi is also an option but is further away.

We will help you with transportation, with approved drivers in safe and nice cars. The trip costs between 1,600 - 2,000 THB from Phuket International Airport to the port of Nam Khen pier where the ferry and longtail boats go over to Koh Kho Khao. This takes around 5 minutes. From the pier you can either walk the 900 m. to Pranee Beach Bungalows, or take a taxi. The taxi costs 50 THB per person, no extra charge for luggage.

The longtail boat costs 20 THB per person until about 18.00 and 40 THB after that. The charge is the same per suitcase or moped. The longtail boats run around the clock while the ferry runs until around 20.00, depending on the number of passengers. It is also possible to bring your car. The price is 40 THB per person and 250 THB for the car. This price doesn´t change depending on time of day.

If you have the time and patience, you can also catch the bus. This is more complicated as you have to take a taxi from either Ban Muang or Takuapa to Nam Khem.

All our bungalows are on Koh Kho Khao beach, on the west side of the island. It is about 600 m. along the main road from the ferry landing, then a small road to the left that goes down to the beach (300 m.) See map below.

WHAT TO SEE AND DO

Near the pier there are a variety of restaurants, bars, supermarkets and shopping facilities. For more restaurants, shopping, and night life you can go to Khao Lak, which can be a nice change from the quiet life on the island.

Every Wednesday and Saturday there is a market in Khao Lak. Takuapa is also worth a visit if you want to experience a genuine Thai city. Takuapa is about a 20 min. drive (20 km.) south-east of Nam Khem pier, where the ferry docks.

If you feel like diving or snorkeling, you will find some of the best sites in the world in these parts. We highly recommend a trip to Similan Island and/or Surin Island (Ko Surin Nuea) which are considered among the 10 best dive and snorkel sites in the world. Here you can swim in crystal clear waters amongst beautiful coral reef and fish in all the colours of the rainbow.

The island is also a good starting point for other activities such as golf, riding elephants in the rainforest, Khao Sok National Park, which is considered one of Thailand´s finest, conoeing or exploring the otherwise spectacular nature.

CLIMATE

On Koh Kho Khao the monsoon winds usually shift in the middle of October, when the clouds blow from the shore to the ocean. The weather gradually becomes drier (more sun and less rain) until the end of November.

From December on it is almost completely dry until halfway through April, normally with a lot of sun and little rain. It is relatively cool during Christmas and in January, night temperatures may come down to 20°C (68°F).

From late January until April, it gradually becomes warmer. When the heat kicks in, the best remedy is to stay close to the beach where a comfortable cool breeze blows from the sea.

Towards the end of April, the monsoon wind shifts again and the rain and wind are upon us again.
